Lead dice. A small rectangular die with six flat probably cut faces, so made from a fragment of thick cast sheet. A number of tiny stamped pits appear to denote values on each face: 1 is opposite [probably] 5, 2 is opposite [probably] 4, and three is opposite 6. Patinated. The use of irregular numbering schemes is characteristic of the 13th to 16th centuries. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500.

Notes:

The numbering scheme departs from both the common ‘sevens’ arrangement whereby opposite faces always total 7, and the less frequently encountered ‘cumulative’ arrangement whereby 1 is opposite 2, 3 opposite 4, and 5 opposite 6.
