Fragment of a medieval copper alloy zoomorphic binding strip, or mount, possibly from a box or casket, dating c. 1200-1400AD.
The object is rectangular in plan and broadly D shaped in section. The strip is decorated with two moulded, stylised animal heads (one facing left, the other facing right). There is one complete rivet hole towards the centre of the object and traces of two further rivet holes. one at each of the two broken ends. The rivet hole at the right-hand end is broken through on the snout of the animal. The one on the left is broken through the main bar. The back of the object is flat and undecorated.

Similar objects can be found on the database, for example NMS-6E12C6 and NMS-C2EFC8. Margeson (1993, Fig 43) also illustrates a number of examples from Norfolk. Read (2001, No. 168) illustrates a similar example from Lincolnshire, which he also refers to as a possible casket fitting.
