A worn Medieval Scottish silver penny of Alexander III (AD 1249-1286) second coinage, Class D2 (Spink S5057) dating to 1280-92. Two stars of seven points in first and third quarters and two mullets of six points in second and forth quarters, giving a total of 26 points on the reverse. Ref: Spink 2015, 19.
Obverse description: Crowned bust facing left with sceptre in front of face.
Obverse inscription: ALEXANDER DEI G[RA].
Reverse description: Long cross with two stars of seven points in first and third quarters and two mullets of six points in second and forth quarters, giving a total of 26 points.
Reverse inscription: REX/SCO/TOR/VM+
Diameter: 19.34mm. Thickness: 0.81mm. Die axis: 10.
Notes:
"Scottish coins of the Period 1280-1358 did not list the mint signature on the reverse (except for a few St Andrews issues of John Balliol). The current held suggestion is that the number of points on the reverse indicates the mint. In this case the 24 point could be identified with Berwick."
