A medieval copper-alloy horse-harness pendant.
Description: The pendant is shield shaped with the partial remains of a suspension loop at the top. The front is decorated in heraldic style, the reverse is undecorated. The level of corrosion has made identification of the motif difficult. It appears to be sectioned, possibly into quarters, with the top left section showing a rampant lion. Small traces of gilding remain on the face.
Discussion: Harness pendants are generally dated from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, with circular and openwork examples predominating the twelfth century and more varied types in the thirteenth and fourteenth century, including the enamelled and heraldic types (Griffiths (1995) The Medieval Horse and its Equipment. Page 69, Fig. 75).
