A medieval finger ring, very much distorted measuring 30mm in length and 16mm across. It is inscribed with the letters:
+ A U E M A R I A G R A T I A P L E N
for ‘Ave Maria Gracia Plena’ (‘Hail Mary full of grace’), the phrase used in salutation to the Virgin Mary by the archangel Gabriel at the time of the Annunciation.
Notes:
The ring is silver (the silver content fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%) and dates from the thirteenth century.
