A cast lead probable mis-cast spindle whorl of probable Early Medieval date, about AD 700 - 850. It conforms most closely to Walton Rogers form A2 (Walton Rogers 2007, pp. 24-25, fig 2.18), as it has a large irregular flat upper face with a rounded flat extention at one side, (possibly as a result of miscasting), and is conical. Walton Rogers dates whorls of this shape from between AD 700 - 1100, but the aperture is 5.5mm in diameter which is at the very lowest end of the range that is usual for early to Mid Saxon whorls (Walton Rogers, 2007 chapter 2, page 23). The whorl is undecorated and has an overall pale cream patina. Measurements are; length 28.9mm, width 23.5mm, thickness 10.47mm and weight 19.5g.  There is a perforation in the centre of the main body of the object, which is 5.5mm in diameter.

Class: Walton Rogers form A2
