A complete post-medieval silver hammered penny of Queen Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603), of the First Coinage dating to AD 1558-1561. Mint mark: Martlet (AD 1560-1561). See North, II, 1991, p. 133, no. 1988.

Obverse: Crowned bust of queen facing left.

Obverse inscription: E . D . G ROSA SINE SPINA.

Reverse: Squared shield bearing the royal coat of arms quartered by a long cross fourchee.  

Reverse inscription: CIVI /TAS / LON / DON. 

It measures 14.76mm in diameter, 0.82mm in thickness and weighs 0.45g. Die axis: 4 o'clock.
