A copper alloy socket from a candle holder of the medieval to early post-medieval period, dated to 1450 - 1550.
This candle socket consists of a deep cylindrical closed socket tapering at the base to a solid moulded stalk which would have fitted into a collar on a branch of a candle holder. The inside diameter of the socket is 15.35mm and it is 24.5mm deep. Lumps of copper alloy material are present inside the socket around about two thirds of the circumference, about 10mm from the top, and may be a product of the casting process, or evidence of a later repair. Externally, the cylinder has a moulded decoration consisting of three pairs of moulded collars located at about 3, 11 and 22mm from the top edge. A moulded decoration appears to be present between the collars, but the surface of the object is too worn and corroded to discern any detail. The stalk has a well-defined moulded collar 9.5mm in diameter just above its terminal knop.
The candle holder socket would have been a part of a candle holder of the branched double-socket type, as described by Brownsword (1985) and shown in Figs 3 - 4.
