CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: SWYOR-DAB180

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Rectangular lead cloth seal dating to the late 16th early 17th Century. The seal is a searchers cloth seal with an integrally cast proforma of the yardage (length) and poundage (weight). These are cast on the flat surface in roman numerals. The inscription reads X X [] , X V III on two lines. The measurements were for particular types of textiles and were set by the authorities - once the textiles was 'searched' (measured and found correct) the seal was stamped and attached. On the reverse there is a split pin attachment which pushed through fabric then the two arms were opened out to secure it. The object weighs 5.54g and measures 21.71mm in length, 19.3mm in width and 5.72mm in thickness.

Inscription: X X [] / X V III
