WEIGHT

Unique ID: SWYOR-DAA4A3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Circular lead weight with stamped markings. The weight has an off-centre circular perforation and three small rectangular stamped markings around the perforation. Each stamped marking contains two crosses ‘X X’. Stamping weights for use in trade began in the late 14th century and went on until the late post-medieval period; this practice was associated with the idea of official control or approval. This weight probably dates to the post-medieval period. The reverse of the weight is plain and undecorated apart from a tiny rectangular imprint next to the hole. The weight measures 35.3mm in diameter and 3.24mm in thickness and is 25.9g in mass.
