COIN DIE

Unique ID: BH-3CD2BC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A solid iron Roman coin die. The die is sub-pyrimedal in shape with the sub-square striking surface that is relatively flat. The sides taper inwards and terminate at a slightly rounded sub-square face. The surfaces are worn and deteriorated with pitting an encrustation of corrosion product. There is no surviving evidence of the coin design on the striking surface.

The coin die measures 42.6mm in height while the striking surface is 28.3mm x 27.9mm. The coin die weighs 125.61 grams.

Another iron coin weight (BH-3C854E) was found in the same field, along with a copper-alloy rod and several blank pellets (BH-3D1EA6)two Roman steelyard weights (BH-A6461B, BH-A622B5) and numerous copper-alloy ingots (BH-7A1121).

The collection is comparable to a similar collection of iron coin dies and blanks from Wing, Buckinghamshire (BUC-D08867); see also BUC-D099B6, as well as a similar coin die from Creslow, Buckinghamshire (BUC-FC9DEF).
