Gilded copper alloy disc brooch, cast from an example incorporating a Roman coin, presumably of gold, set within a beaded mount. The outer face shows a bearded, laureate head to the right with an illegible legend; the personage is Septimius Severus, emperor of Rome from AD193 until 211. The reverse carries a figure of Roma or Minerva standing to the left leaning on a shield and holding a Victoriola. The legend may be VIRT[us] AVGG. An integral frame with a beaded border encircles the cast coin. The rear face carries the remains of a copper alloy catcphplate and pin mechanism together with the rusted traces of an iron pin. This brooch is strikingly similar to another from Costessey (NMS-C7A205) which is about twelve miles from the findspot of this example. A ninth century date is likely.
