A complete lead conical spindle whorl probably dating to the Medieval period c. AD 1100-1500.
The object is circular in plan with a circular perforation and eight broadly equidistant circumferential lobes; two of which are fused together.
Measurements: diameter: 27mm; thickness: 12mm and weight: 31.7g.
Lead spindle whorls can date from the Roman period to the Post Medieval Period and are hard to date precisely. However, the wide central perforation indicates a post-saxon date. A cast lead lobed whorl is illustrated in Read (2021: 272, no: 1554) and dated c. AD 1100-1500. A similar example on the database is: GLO-21E144 which has been given a broader date range.
