BROOCH

Unique ID: WMID-938587

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Roman dating (1st to 2nd Centuries AD).

Around 50% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, a wing and part of the bow. The rest is missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The brooch has a flat head, with a saltire or cross engraved on the top. The bow continues downwards, after a 90 degree bend at the top. The front of the bow was originally decorated with enamel. The enamel is too degraded to determine original colours. Below this, an old patinated break is present. A ridge is present at the shoulder junction between wing and bow. One wing survives. It is semi cylindrical in nature, with a semi circular end cap. A groove is present behind the wings, this would have retained the spring. The clay casting core is visible. No decoration is present on the reverse of the brooch. The brooch was silvered.

It measures 18.0 mm in length, 13.9 mm wide and 7.5 mm thick. It weighs 3.2 g.

The brooch is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

A couple of similar brooches have been recorded on the PAS database, these are: WMID-9005a9 and WAW-4C0766. The closest parallel in Mackreth 2011 is that illustrated as no 1726 on plate 77, classified as Colchester derivative with trumpet style knops (CD H/PH 1).

Class: Colchester derivative with trumpet style knops (CD H/PH 1).
