A complete lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (c. AD 43-1800).
The object is circular in plan with an off-centre perforation of 8.62mm diameter. The object is sub-rectanguar with a flat base, slightly tapering sides and a flat upper face. No decoration is present on either face. The object has a cream patina.
The object is 26.55mm in diameter, 16.4mm thick and weighs 65.17g.
Loom weights and spindle whorls were used for a long periods of time (Iron Age to the early Post Medieval period) and undecorated examples can be difficult to date, but Walton Rogers (1997, p.1731) suggests Roman spindle whorls have a diameter of between 4-8mm while the diameter of medieval spindles is in the range of 9-11mm to fit the thicker spindles of this period.
