Medieval to Post Medieval (late 12th to 18th centuries) strap fitting, mount, in the shape of an elongated triangle with an integral knop at the narrow edge. The mount is convex on the outer face. On the reverse there are two integral spikes which are oval in section. The surface of the fitting has a matte brown colour with traces of a coating which is now black and may have been linseed oil. The strap fitting measures 20.80mm long and 7.93mm wide. It weighs 1.33g.
Margeson (1993) illustrates a similar example, No. 284, and dates to the late 12th to 14 centuries. The mount may also date into the 17th century. Strap fittings have been in use from the late Medieval to Post Medieval period. Egan (2005; p. 39) comments that when they were used as dress accessories and continued on horse harness straps into the 18th century. The surface condition and coating suggest a Post Medieval date is more likely for this example.
