A complete, cast, copper-alloy, post-medieval spherical bell dating to c.AD 1500 - 1700.
The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is c 16.12 mm in length, 10.73 mm in height, 4.33 mm thick and has a small sub-circular aperture, measuring approximately c 6.37 mm in height, c.7.02 mm in width. The upper and lower hemispheres are divided by a prominent horizontal circumferential joining rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about halfway down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a circular sound hole. Each is c.5.66 mm in diameter. Two sound holes in the lower hemisphere are integral with a sound 'slot', running directly underneath and parallel in direction to the suspension loop, although this is now largely broken and missing.
The upper hemisphere is worn, the lower hemispheres ais decorated with an inscribed sunburst or foliate (elongated ovoid radiating petal) pattern where each 'ray', 'leaf' or 'petal' has been incised with straight longitudinal lines which echo the sunbursts. A spherical iron sound-'pea' still moves in the belly of the bell. There is a bell-founders mark of a 'T' shape hammer in an inscribed semi-circle shape just above the sound slot. The design is badly disturbed by a big gash.
Bells of this type were used on animals from the late medieval period through to the nineteenth century. The diameter of this bell, at 38.15 mm, is quite large and it is possible it was for use by cattle rather than sheep.
