A complete cast copper-alloy socketed axehead of early Iron Age to Roman date (800 BC - AD 410).
Description: The axehead has a lozenge-shaped shaft, which narrows to form the blade. The butt is flat. In profile, the axe flares outwards from the shaft, the top edge rising up slightly before curving downwards, and thye bottom edge of the blade curving downwards to meet the cutting edge. The cutting edge is flat and diagonal. A circular perforation is cut into the shaft The axehead has a smooth suface with a medium grey-green patina.

Discussion: Miniature socketed axeheads can be dated from the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition through to the Roman period. They probably functioned as amulets or votive offerings and are particularly associated with the sites of shrines, where they were either deposited or acquired as votive items.
