Roman (70 - 200 AD) brooch: An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative, double lug, Harlow style brooch. The brooch is incomplete. The wings are semi-cylindrical with no caps. The exterior of the wings are decorated with a single vertical groove at the terminal. At the centre of the interior of the wings there is a perforated vertical lug, with two perforations, through the lower perforation the copper alloy axis bar passes. The spring is coiled around the axis bar seven times and the chord passes through the upper perforation. The pin is complete, but slightly bent and tapers to a sharp point.

The bow head is hump-like, and has prominent ridge which is sited which tapers in depth and width, down the bow, fading away at the mid point. The bow is sub-square with rounded corners in section. It is broken approximately three-quarters down the bow. The break is not recent.

The brooch measures 49.77mm long, is 20.70mm width across wings and weighs 10.67 grams.

The brooch has a dark brown patina and is in very good condition.

A similar brooch is illustrated in Mackreth, Plate 32 No. 11498, and is classified as Chap 3, Part 1 Group 1b dating to c. 70 to 200.
