BUCKLE

An incomplete Post-Medieval copper alloy buckle dating to c.AD 1660-1720. It is missing its chape to an old break.

The buckle frame is  D-shape in cross section with a convex front and flat reverse. It is also slightly convex in profile. In plan it is broadly sub-rectangular albeit with convex narrow edges and longer edges with a concave depression in their middle the apex of which is drilled at its middle to allow for a separate spindle. The frame has ornate moulded and incised decoration. The narrow edges are incised across their length by numerous parallel incised transverse lines while the longer edges have moulded collars either side of the spindle flanked by moulded petals.

Traces of the chape survived as stubs wrapping around the spindle. The pin then fits into a slot cut into the chape allowing it to be attached to the axis bar. The pin is oval in cross section and narrows to a rounded point.

The buckle is a medium green colour.

It is 32.5mm long, 21.6mm wide, 6.5mm thick and weighs 7.00 grams

Similarly shaped examples are illustrated in Whitehead (2003, 99) who suggests that these buckles date from the post medieval period (1660-1720) and were used as shoe or knee buckles
