A fragment of a Early Medieval Jellinge-style copper alloy gilded brooch or pendant, dating to the period c. AD 900 - 1100. Possible Kersaw Type A3 or Type I D.
The fragment is sub-triangular in plan and the remains outer face is decorated an 'S' shaped Jellinge-style animal. The animal begins in relief with a round eye and open bulbous jaw. A long double-strand tongue emerges to interlace over the body and under one leg. The animal is twisted into a reversed-S shape, with an angular junction between the long curving neck and the body which runs across the centre of the object; both neck and body are transversely ribbed with a contour line running along the back. From the angular junction emerges a transversely ribbed foreleg which ends in a hooked foot. The bottom of the object is missing and therefore it is not possible to describe the rest of the animal. Much of the gilding still survives on the outer face.
The reverse in undecorated and there are no remains of any fittings making it difficult to tell the function of the object. It is also difficult to tell if it is possibly Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian.
Measurements: Length, 21.32mm; Width, 22.16mm; Thickness, 2.4mm; Weight, 2.94g
Kerhsaw (2013) illustrates similar examples on pages 110- 114. These are classed as pendant Type A3 and brooch Typle I D with a similar motif of an animal depicted in profile and its extended tongue passes over its body and behind its rear legs.
The Jellinge style dates to the tenth century and is a Viking art style. Similar Jellinge-style brooches and pendants have been recorded on the PAS database. WAW-6D8C42 depicts a similar 'S' shaped Jellinge style animal and is dated to the 10th century. SF7482 is almost identical in decoration and also dated to the 10th century.
