A complete cast copper alloy pin likely of Roman date (c.AD43-410). The head is sub-biconical (with a max diameter of 7.0mm) with a shallow pointed top and a small collar (9.7mm high from collar to tip of head). The body of the head rises from the collar in a stylistic acorn shape with the ‘cap’ emphasized by a circumferential groove and decorated with a cross-hatch pattern. The shallow conical tip is undecorated. The shaft is circular in section and tapers gradually from the collar to the pointed end (max diameter of 3.5mm, mid point diameter .2.5mm, end 1.0mm). The pin is likely a hair pin and may have been used to sew the hair into a style. The overall length of the pin is 61.6mm. The metal is a medium green patina and weighs 3.3g.
