An incomplete early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver penny of Æthelred II (978-1016), Long Cross type (North 774) dating c.AD 997-1003, moneyer: Godleof, mint: Stamford. Ref: North 1994: 159.

The coin is missing a part of the outer edge and field, removing approximately 20% of the inscription.

Obverse:  Bare-headed bust left.  Æ[ÐELRÆD]REXANGL.

Reverse: Long cross voided with each limb terminating in three crescents. +GOD/ELEO/FM.../.STAN

The spelling of the moneyer's name is paralleled by three coins in Norwegian museum collections (Screen 2013: nos 786-8). Those three coins are all die-linked but there is no die link with this coin.

Diameter: 19.61mm; thickness: 0.95mm and weight: 1.22g.

Notes:

This is only the third penny of Æthelred II struck at Stamford to be recorded by the PAS and the first from West Sussex.
