An incomplete late Roman gold finger ring, dating to AD 300 - 450. The ring is almost complete, a stone or glass setting is missing from the bezel, the remainder of the ring is complete. The object is formed of a single sheet, the bezel is flat and pointed oval, terminating in a length of twisted wire. On each side the wire is looped twice to form the hoop, this also borders the bezel. The wire is soldered together to secure it. The bezel is decorated in the centre with a separately attached circular gold plate which is rectangular in section this would have housed a glass or stone setting. Surrounding the setting is a thinner section of beaded wire. The shoulders are decorated with curled beaded wire, the decoration is mirrored on both sides.
Length: 20.08 mm
Width: 9.92 mm
Thickness: 2.31 mm
Weight: 5.71 g
Discussion: the ring can be paralleled by examples from the Thetford treasure, particularly cats. 12 and 13 (Johns & Potter 1983). Another close parallel comes from Hoxne, Suffolk (not published as part of the treasure find) which has an almost identical hoop but a much larger bezel (SF-D726C7; 2009 T347).
