A lead alloy cloth seal dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1570-1620.
Both pieces of the seal survvie, and the tab which once joined them is cleary visible if broken. The main inscription reads:
DUYTS/ COLCESTER / BAYE/ 1571 -
There is also an unclear inscription in the legend around the outside of the other half of the seal. The central heraldic motif is also unclear and there is damage in the form of two perforations.
Geoff Egan notes that the use of Dutch suggests a first-generation immigrant milieu. These particular seals are so far only known from London and Kent, see KENT-F12FD3 and LON-22F377 which is of very similar form. To find one in Devon is of local interest and the find has hence been marked as a find of note.
