An incomplete decorated lead alloy tobacco box lid knop of Post Medieval dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD).

The knop is broadly sub circular in plan and irregular in profile. The central knop / lid is broadly decorated as a flower. It has a central raised boss, located within a circle. A series of radiating lentoid shaped petals extend away from the circle. It is likely that these were originally coated with a surface which has since decayed. The neck below the knop of the lid becomes narrow before expanding outwards in a slanting platform with the remains of the rivet protruding out from underneath.

It measures 19.6 mm in length, 19.1 mm wide and is 14.8 mm thick. It weighs 11.4 g.

The artefact is in a worn but fair condition, with an even off white / grey patina across the surface. The edges exhibit signs of abrasion.

Similar examples are illustrated in G Bailey's 'Finds identified', 2000, page 62, which he dates to the middle of the 17th century and states that the lead boxes were used to keep moist tobacco inside. It is likely that this form of tobacco jar is popular into the late 18th century. Several others from Shropshire and Staffordshire have been recorded on the PAS database (HESH-F74631HESH-2195D2 and WMID-5DAF87).
