An incomplete (missing the pin) cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Harlow double lug type, dating to c.AD 43-100. Mackreth 2011, CD Ha
Description : T-shaped in form, comprising of hemispherical wings that are open, concave on the reverse with a double pierced lug in the centre, through which the chord of the coil springs passes in the upper piercing and the axis bar of the coils through the lower. The spring has five coils either side of the bow, with the nearest to the bow on the right side (viewed from front) displaying an old break and would have once extended to form the pin. The bow is curved (now slightly bent to left) D-shaped in cross-section, being moulded rounded on the face with a longitudinal groove either side and flat on the reverse. It tapers down to the foot where a deep triangular catch-plate is located which has the back edge rolled over through 90 degrees to form a pin rest. The surface is smooth and displays a mid green patina.
Measurements : height 37.5mm, wings width 20.0mm, thickness (bow mid-point) 2.3mm and weight 5.7g.
