A copper alloy model, or toy, one-eighth farthing coin of Queen Victoria. Obverse: Young head of Queen Victoria, left, with letters V - R to either side. Reverse: MODEL EIGHTH FARTHING 1848.
Notes:
These model coins are considered to be unofficial “trial” pieces and may have been produced to advertise possible future coin designs. This particular example is part of a series of 4 or 5 other coins (Series B) which comprised 1/2, 1/4 , 1/8, 1/16 and possibly also 1/32 farthing coins. It was probably issued by Joseph Moore of Birmingham.
The majority of these model/toy coins bear the date 1848 but varieties exist for the portrait types and the size and position of the lettering. Some examples have the initials VR either side of the bust, as this example, whilst others have the lettering VICTORIA REG.
