An incomplete Post-Medieval lead-alloy medallion, dating to c.AD 1840 - 1870. The medallion is circular and some of the edge is missing.
Obverse: Crowned bust facing, in each corner is a pair of concentric rings. The bust is crudely made, it consists of a face, hair and crown. The crown is made of two arches, a cross in the centre of both, below sits a large rounded head with annulet eyes, a squashed triangular nose and annulet mouth. No neck, or body is apparent, long hair sits either side of the face and terminates at the edge, it appears to be made of a raised hatched design. There is no lettering boardering the edges.
Reverse: Uncertain design, outer inscription possibly: [...]THERIN[...] 'N' is reversed.
Diameter: 30 mm
Weight: 9 g
The exact date of this medallion/token is not immediately obvious. It bears resemblance in both quality and execution to the so-called Shadwell Forgeries or 'Billy and Charleys', which were forgeries of medieval and roman objects produced by William Smith (Billy) and Charles Eaton (Charley) during the middle of the 19th century in lead and brass.
This example does not seem to match those on http://www.mernick.org.uk/b&c/images.htm
Similarities can be seen with DUR-E404D2 in the style of the crown and concentric circles bordering the obverse of the medallion. The bust style bares similar resemblance to some of the Billy and Charley coins.
