Incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy double purse bar. The upper bar is sub-circular in cross-section (or perhaps square with rounded corners) with sub-oval, bi-convex terminals at each end. An integral trapezoidal block projects downward of the centre of the bar, tapering in width from top to bottom and of equal thickness to the bar. An integral circular-cross-sectioned shank projects downwards from the centre of the block, passes through a hole in the central block of the lower bar and is then secured by an oval rove.
The lower block is sub-rectangular and longer and wider than the upper block but of equal thickness. It has a rectangular cut-out at the bottom-centre edge to allow clearance for the rove as the lower bar freely swivels about the shank. The arms of the lower bar project from just below the centre of the block’s sides. They are longer than those of the upper bar and of similar dimensions cross-sectionally. One arm terminates in an almost plano-convex, slightly conical knob, larger than those of the upper bar. The other terminates in a worn break.
All parts are patinated a mid-reddish-brown, with patches of green. A very similar example on this database is IOW-06E7B5. Mid-16th to mid-17th century.
Length (upper bar): 62.2mm (lower bar): 70.7mm. Width (top of upper block to bottom of lower block): 29.8mm. Thickness (blocks): 5.5mm. Weight: 40.3g
