A medieval silver terzo di grosso (1/3 groat) of Pope Paul II (AD 1461-74), mint: Ancona, mintmaster Francesco Nicolai (mint-mark 'f' enclosed in leaf-shaped motif, patriarchal cross above; Biaggi no 50). Ref: De Wit 2008 (Künker auctions): 231.
Obverse: PAVLVS PP SECVNDVS; shield with bend over lion rampant surmounted by a mitre above crossed keys, all within an elongated double quatrefoil.
Reverse: S/ PET/RVS S /[P]/A/VLVS; St Peter and St Paul standing facing; St Paul is holding a sword.
The coin has been pierced for suspension, and has been bent, possibly deliberately. It has a diameter of 19.64mm, a thickness (bent) of 0.97mm, and weighs 1.1g.
This is the third coin of this type on the PASD, after LVPL-6A35B6 and DEV-C34C5D and it is those records from which the mint mark identification has been taken.
Notes:
The coin has been pierced, indicating a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential Treasure (under Treasure Act 1996). However, coins dating after AD1180 with similar piercings are also known in hoards of currency, suggesting that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins, and not all coins were pierced to convert them into objects such as pendants. It therefore cannot be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as another type of object at the time that the coin was deposited.
