PIPE TAMPER

Unique ID: NARC-3D0A07

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy Pipe Tamper of Post-Medieval to Modern date (AD 1650-1800). The terminal is cast in three dimensions and represents the form of St George slaying the dragon upon which he stands. Both the figures are slightly flattened. The figure of St George stands upright, wears armour and holds a spear. The spear is arrange so that it crosses the figure's body diagonally. The lower part shows the serpentine figure of a dragon with his mouth open, the spear is largely missing due to old abraded breaks, the retained lower end however pierces the mouth of the dragon. Beneath the dragon there is a circular collar below which is an abraded break, but which would have formed the top of the shaft of the tamper. The metal is green in colour with a pitted patina.
