STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: DEV-D20184

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy swivel strap fitting dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1100-1200.

The object is composed of a rectangular frame at its upper end, which descends into a cylindrical column which narrows then widens into a collar before the break, where it would have been attached to the other parts of the swivel. There are slender incised lines placed around the various decorative collars of the column, and the upper horizontal part of the frame is lozenge shaped in cross section.

It is reminiscent of BH-902A6A, which is a more complete example but composed around a triangular design rather than a combination of rectangle and column. It is also faintly reminiscent of WAW-26DE03, although less bulbous. Both are forms of medieval swivel strap fittings.

Measurements: 30.2mm length, 19.1mm width, 6.2mm thickness, weight 7.78g.
