A complete Post Medieval copper shoe or clog clasp dating to circa AD 1700-1900. The object has been machine stamped and would have been used with a similar hasp to secure a wooden shoe to the foot.
The body of the object is broadly rectangular. The edges are curvilinear, with rounded corners. Decoration is in the form of a pelleted border round the edge of the clasp. Three rectangular slots are present in the centre of the clasp. An integral curved hook with pelta shaped terminal projects from one end.
It measures 20.3 mm in length, 14.6 mm wide and 3.7 mm thick. It weighs 1.5 g.
Bailey (1992: pg14) illustrates similar examples, which are dated to the 18th and 19th centuries. Bailey suggests this type of clasp was one of the favoured methods alongside buttons and laces used by clog-makers for securing the wooden clog. There are several similar clasps recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-18BB9B and PUBLIC-F8DAE1.
