BELL

Unique ID: BH-117259

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper-alloy late Medieval bell dating c. AD 1300-1500. The bell comprises a flat sub-rectangular suspension shaft broken across the circular perforation. At the opposite end the shaft expands into a head with four pointed leaves folded inwards to form a hollow, slightly flattened, sphere. Neither the surfaces of the suspension loop nor the head are decorated. The pea within the head no longer rattles, probably hindered by one of the compressed leaves. All of the bell's surfaces have patchy dark brown and light green patination. The entire object measures 20.8mm long; the bell head 13.4mm diameter and the shaft 5.8mm wide and 3.1mm thick. The bell weighs 4.95 grams.
