A small copper alloy double-loop buckle, probably dating from the medieval to post medieval period, about AD 1250 - 1600. The buckle is unusual as it has been handmade, using a length of round rod which was flattened at either end and in the centre, all on the same plane, then formed into an oval. The flat sections were drilled and a central iron bar was used as a rivet to hold the two ends and forming the bar, which would have completed the buckle. The centre bar has corroded away leaving just the remains of the rusted bar at either side. The buckle has a brown/green patina. Dimensions length: 20.72mm, width: 15.99mm, thickness: 4.85mm, weight: 1.47g.
This unusual form of construction can be paralleled by NMS-46A03B and NMS-86E456 which are suggested to be 15th or 16th century. These records draw parallels with other superficially similar examples that are composed of two U-shaped pieces with a separate iron bar joining them, which can be classified as Cassels 2013 Type.1.4E which are dated to the late 13th to 16th centuries. Other Cassels type 1.4E buckles include PUBLIC-07BE91 and NMS-DEEE8D which give published examples.
