Post-medieval copper alloy dress hook, a very large example of Read 2008 early post-medieval single sharp-hooked clasp Class E. The oval loop is comparatively small. In the centre of the gently domed plate a hole punched through from the front may have held a circular appliqué within a cabled moulded ring which is set within a circle of fifteen annulets. This in turn is surrounded by another ring of cable moulding. The edge consists of six rounded lobes, including two flanking the loop, and the intervening spaces are filed with pellets. The hook springs from an elaborate collar, a large pellet between a pair of oblique spiked projections and above a moulding which probably represents a pair of eyes. There are traces of white-metal coating. A close parallel has not been noted. Weight 8.0g. Length 49mm. Width 28.6mm. 16th century.
