An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting, likely from a sword bet, dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1600).
Description : Composite in form consisting of two 0.8mm thickness plates that are riveted together without a spacer. The 'face' plate is rounded at one end then with in-curved sides narrows to a trefoil end. The trefoil end is likely a broken rounded hook. The reverse plate is a simple rectangular sandwich plate that is secured with two in-situ copper-alloy rivets, fitted along the centre line at each end. The face plate has decoration consisting of an engraved centre line along the length and chevrons upon it. The surface displays a corroded brown colour with patches of green.
Dimensions : length 24.2mm, width 15.5mm, overall thickness 2.9mm and weight 2.7g.
Discussion : This object seems to be a sword hanger paired with a backing plate, which is unusual. The form of the hooked plate is however fairly well paralleled amongst 16th century sword hanger hooks like LVPL-ADB3BA and illustrated in Read (2001: 43), no. 373.
