A miniature copper alloy cast socketed Axe Pendant of early Iron Age to Roman date (800 BC - AD 410), 22.2mm in length. The axehead has a narrow body, with a slightly flared blade with a curved edge. The side loop is partially integral within the line of the body. The socket is sub rectangular and hollow. There is no decoration. Cf. Bliss (2020) Class C1/C2.
Notes:
Miniature socketed axeheads can be dated from the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition through to the Roman period, though a date towards the earlier end of the spectrum is more likely. They probably functioned as amulets or votive offerings and are particularly associated with the sites of shrines, where they were either deposited or acquired as votive items.
