An incomplete copper-alloy brooch (Colchester one piece) of  Iron Age to Roman date (c. AD 25-70).

Description:

The brooch survives as the head, bow, foot, and a separate spring and pin mechanism although the pin has broken off at the spring as is now missing.

The head of the brooch possesses two short, wings which have a total width of 19mm. These are rectangular in cross-section, and sub-rectangular in plan with rounded ends, one of which has broken off. They are flat at their back but raise gradually to meet the bow so that they are triangular in cross section. The wings are decorated with vertical grooves.

Behind the wings is a centrally placed projecting bar which splits into two, one part at the top, one at the bottom. The bottom section curls upwards and to the left to form three coils before curving right and then straightening out across the length of the head. It then curls down, to repeat the coils so that it is symmetrical to the other side. Where it meets the first coil in the middle, it straightens once more to form the pin which has now broken off. The upper section curves up and over itself narrowing and flattening as it does so before being folded flat against the front of the bow leaving a small loop above the head of the brooch through which the straight position of the spring travels.

The bow projects from the front of the wings with a width of 5.8mm. It is sub-oval shaped, almost sub-rectangular, in cross section and gradually narrows down its length to a minimum width of 2.4mm at the foot which is pointed and plain. The entire bow is also plain and undecorated baring the strip folded over its top.

At the back of the lower half of the bow, are four flat, irregular-shaped projections which are all that remain of a catchplate. The spaces between these suggest this to be of the openwork type.

The brooch has a medium green-brown patina.

Measurements: The brooch is 63.1mm long, 19mm wide, 6mm thick in profile and weighs 14.41 grams.
