A hoop of gold beaded wire of probably Early Medieval date, consisting of a single strand with ends hammered together into a narrow, square-sectioned join. The hoop has been crushed and distorted.

Notes:

The precise function of the hoop is unclear, but its closest parallels appear to be associated with early medieval sword hilts, for instance grip collars or cross guards. See, for instance, the many similar fragments in the Staffordshire Hoard (Fern et al 2019, cat. nos. 191–210). These fragments date to the seventh century, with gold beaded wire in general being popular on prestige metalwork produced during this period.
