An incomplete and very worn cast copper-alloy stirrup strap mount (Williams Class A, Type 11A) of medieval date (c.1070-1140).

Description: The mount is broadly triangular in shape with a flat lower edge and slightly curving convex sides terminating in a trefoil terminal with central rivet hole. On one side, the terminal has broken slightly. The front has a moulded motif of a beast (lion or dog) facing left, with front paw raised and head bent back and facing upwards with open jaws. The lower edge has a flange to the rear with two attachment holes above. The mount has a dark brown patina with patches of iron rusting on the reverse.

Measurements: length: 46.1mm; width: 27.2mm ; thickness: 3.1mm; weight: 14.31g

Discussion: David Williams classifies this form of stirrup-strap mount as a Class A, Type 11a illustrating and describing several parallels (Williams 1996: 58 - 67). This form is by far the most common of the varied classes of stirrup-strap mount Williams listing 63 examples and more than a 140 other examples have been reported to the PAS since the publication was produced. The majority of stirrup-strap mounts date from the 11th century (Williams 1996. 2) with a possible 'terminus post quem' around 1140 (Lewis 2007, 184).
