An incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester derivative, rearhook type brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 40-70). The brooch comprises the wings, rearhook, bow and catch plate. The spring and pin are missing.
The wings are semi-cylindrical with a compressed rearhook projecting from the centre of the upper edge. The front of the wings are not decorated while the interior is hollowed and also undecorated.
The bow projects from the centre of the front of the wings. It is initially sub-trapezoidal in cross-section before transitioning to become circular-sectioned and gradually narrows in diameter as the bow descends to a rounded foot. There is no decoration on the otherwise smooth finish.
A thin triangular solid catch plate projects from the lower bow and foot. A small portion of the outer edge is bent slightly inwards where a catch would have housed the pin terminal.
The entire object has even mid-green patination.
The brooch measures 33.8mm long. The wings are 21.4mm wide, 5.1mm high and 2.9mm thick. The bow is a maximum of 6.6mm wide and 5.5mm thick, and 1.5mm diameter at the foot. The catch plate is 15mm long and 0.8mm thick. The entire brooch weighs 5.35 grams.
