A complete, but in two pieces, copper alloy buckle dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1650-1720).

This buckle is in two pieces. The buckle itself is missing the middle bar, for the pin to wrap around. The other piece is the pin itself, which is not attached to the buckle but was found with it. The buckle is oval in shape with bevelled edges. The frame is plain with a brown and dark green patina and patches of iron corrosion. The surface is mainly smooth. The reverse is undecorated. The pin is triangular in shape, with a rounded tip. The pin appears to be more worn than the frame, with significant corrosion.

The buckle frame measures 31.36 mm in length, 24.73 mm in width, 2.19 mm in thickness and weighs 6.14g by itself.

The pin measures 31.01mm in length, 14.09mm in width at its widest, 7.12, at its narrowest, and is2.24mm in thickness. The pin alone weighs 3.53g

The weight of the buckle as a whole is 9.67g.

Whitehead (2003, p 48-49) illustrates a number of similar annular buckle with oval frames, as nos. 278 and 283, which he dates to c. AD 1650 to AD 1720. As most of this late sub-annular buckles are of small to medium size, he suggests that they were used as shoe buckle after they came back into fashion c.1660. A large number of similar buckles are registered onto this database, including WMID-9F1A1E and SUR-45238D.
