SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: LVPL-C24FEC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete lead / lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating to the medieval period (c.AD 1200-1500). This object has been neatly broken to the side of the perforation and only roughly 2/3 of the original object remains.

The object is biconical in shape with steeped edges and a central perforation measuring 9.1mm in diameter. There appears to have been decoration on at least one of the faces, but the object is too worn to make out what it would have been.

The incomplete spindle whorl is 27.35mm in diameter, 9.8 thick and weighs 21.36g.

Spindle whorls, as an artefact type, can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. The weight of the spindle whorl is suggestive of a thick wool thread being spun, as there is a direct relationship between the weight of the whorl and the thickness of the resulting thread. Fine threads such as silk require a lighter whorl than those used to spun wool or linen.
