BATTLEAXE

Unique ID: LEIC-4821A1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete late Neolithic to Bronze Age stone perforated battleaxe, dating to 2500 - 1800 BC. The axe is broadly triangular in plan. In section the triangular blade narrows sharply to a slightly rounded rectangular butt (rectangular with rounded corners). The axe has a flared blunted crescentic edge. The blade of the battleaxe is on the same alignment (vertical) as the perforation. It is broadly convex in profile and appears complete. The perforation is positioned at a point approximately 1/3 of the way along the length of the axe, closest to the butt end. The perforation itself has a slight hour glass profile. This is a result of how it was made, being drilled from each side. The perforation has a diameter of 14.7 mm at the widest point. At the edge of the butt, an incomplete hourglass shaped scar is visible, this is likely from an earlier attempt to drill a hole which caused the butt to snap. There is no obvious old damage from use. This battle-axe fits with Roe (1979) 'Developed' class of battle-axe.
Length: 83.61 mm
Height: 70.05 mm
Width: 51.5 mm
Weight: 190.23 g

The battleaxe is a mid grey/brown colour with a relatively well formed surface. This surface has been abraded in places. However most of the surface retains its 'pecked surface'.
