Copper alloy harness fitting or terret ring of later Iron Age to early Roman date (c. 100BC – 100AD). The terret is D-shaped in cross section. The attachment bar is rectangular in cross section and triangular in plan with the rounded point of the triangle projecting below the bar. On either side of the bar are two circular stops. At the apex of the ring is a smaller circular moulding which has two circumferential grooves. There is no other decoration present. The terret has a mid-green coloured patina with some areas of corrosion and abrasion.
Length: 48.7mm; width: 46.0mm; thickness across the knops: 12.3mm; weight: 36.78g.
Notes:
It has not been possible to identify a published parallel for the terret. However, a very similar one has been recorded on the database as HESH-4586CB. This record suggests that this form is likely to be a hybrid to Lewis' Triple lobed terret type' which is dated to the Iron Age / Roman transition and into the 2nd century AD
