A complete Medieval-post-Medieval copper-alloy roundel (rondel) dagger pommel (c. 1350- c. 1600).
The object is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in cross section, but it is formed of an elaborate design of eight rounded protruding knops, between which are pairs of raised ribs, which create three grooves. there is a depressed circle in the centre, in the middle of which is the square shaped aperture for attachment.
Roundel daggers were long and thin with circular pommels and guards useful for stabbing through cloth or armour and were used for attack. They were carried by soldiers and also as probable self defence weapons by merchants. They first appear in the mid-14th century and remain popular into the 16th (Ward Perkins 1940: 42-47).
Although this example is particularly elaborate, there are parallel examples to be found on the PAS database. These include: NSM-390B47, NMS-73F2C6, SF-460208 and SF-56C0E
