Silver denarius of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14)
Obv. IMP CARAVSIVS F AVG; Laureate draped and cuirassed right
Rev. FORTVN(reverse) - (A AVG); Fortuna seated left on wheel, holding rudder and cornucopiae
In exergue: - // RSR
RIC V, pt 2, p. 511, no. 567var.
This is the third example of coin with a seated Fortuna on a silver denarius of Carausius. The other two specimens are of RIC 567 with the obverse IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AV. This coin, with the obverse legend IMP CARAVSIVS F AVG, is therefore a new variety. It is possible that the F in the obverse legend is a poorly cut P. The style of the coin is not as compact and neat as that of the other two coins.
