A complete early medieval (Middle Saxon) double sharp-hooked clasp (dress hook).
The object has a central bar which is barrel shaped with an oval section, and has a 3.15mm circular drilled hole, which may have been used for suspending a chain or a cord. From the central bar the object tapers towards incurving hooks. These objects are sometimes referred to as shroud hooks. For a discussion see Hinton 1996, 47-8. Similar exampes are known from Norwich (Margeson 1993, 18: Fig 9 no. 79) and are recorded on this database (PAS SF-E1B756 and NMS-EE54B7). This example may be classified as Read 2008 early medieval Class M, Type 1. It is likely to date from the 8th to early 9th century AD.
